Pam Baldwin, SPHR - HR Technology Director

“From your Analytics and Technology Chair”

At the HR Florida State Conference, I was able to interact with technology mavens, superstars, bloggers, and the behind the scene folks that made things possible with their support -- our vendors, conference team, and volunteers.  I came away enriched and supercharged, ready to implement some of the stellar ideas I gleaned from the Conference.

Heather Vogel, MHR, SPHR
Shaping energetic, educated and engaged HR business professionals who have an influence on our field and the organizations we serve.

Heather Vogel

Well, we’re all trying to get back on track after the excitement of our record-breaking state conference.  I know I logged at least two miles a day just walking around the Rosen Shingle Creek and spending time in the Exhibit Hall, in the concurrent sessions, and at our Tuesday evening entertainment.  I would be remiss if I didn’t send out a wholehearted and heartfelt thank you to our 2011 conference team, led by Dana Chatelain, SPHR and Heather Deyrieux, SPHR. Thank you too, council members, for joining us in celebration of our HR Professional of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Chapter Excellence Awards.  Check out the rest of the eSource for details regarding this year’s award winners.

A quick reminder:  the last council meeting of 2011 will take place on October 21, 2011 at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel in Tampa.  As you’ve seen from our spectacular state conferences, leadership conferences and council meetings, HR Florida counts on volunteers every day for its continued success.
We have long-term, short-term and project-based volunteer opportunities available.

State Council Meeting Reminder

Heather Vogel, MHR, SPHR - President

October is the last council meeting for the year.   It will be held on Friday, October 21 from 9 am - 4 pm.  The location is Renaissance Hotel in Tampa.

SHRM Advocacy Team Happenings in Florida

To be effective in today's business climate, it is important that HR professionals understand how government works, how legislation impacts the profession, and how HR professionals can influence public policy.  The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has launched an initiative to create a nationwide member advocacy network of HR Advocates collectively known as the Advocacy Team, or A-Team, to fully engage our members in the public policy process.

SHRM and the HR Florida State Council are pleased to host a series of SHRM A-Team sessions in Florida during September and October.  The sessions are designed to inform and educate HR professionals about how to engage in the public policy process as HR Advocates or Advocacy Captains (Advocacy Captains are key contacts helping coordinate SHRM's efforts in each congressional district).

During the program, David Lusk, SHRM's Senior Associate for Member Advocacy, will take you through the basic steps of becoming involved in the public policy process; provide best practices for contacting, meeting with and building lasting relationships with elected officials and their staff outside of Washington; and, touch upon effective ways of communicating the HR professional’s perspective on key workplace issues.

The A-Team programs have been pre-approved for HR Certification Institute strategic recertification credit hours (NOTE: not all sessions are of the same length).  Sessions will be held in conjunction with various Florida chapter programs around the state for your convenience.  More information about each session is available at the links as noted.  You may also contact each respective chapter president with questions about the session location, time or cost (when applicable).

We hope you will be able to join us!

Kids Against Hunger

Shannon Lands, SPHR - Treasurer

When HR Florida’s conference committee and Executive Council members chose to support this charity, a seemingly goal of raising $1,500 for this cause which seemed realistic given the state of the current economy.  However, all of this changed soon after a charity representatives spoke at a general session about the organization’s mission, showed a video clip about how far a few dollars can go, and conference attendees spent some of their own time helping to literally prepare packages of food.   When all was said and done, attendees contributed $5,059.49!!!!!
