State Legislative Affairs

Damian Taylor, Esq. - State Legislative Affairs Director

On May 27, 2011, I attended the SHRM Advocacy Team (“A-Team") training session hosted by Charlotte County SHRM in Punta Gorda. David Lusk from SHRM Government Affairs was the presenter, and there were close to 20 attendees, which was an outstanding turnout. David provided a similar training session the day before with HR Tampa, which Iggy Garcia attended as the HR Florida Federal Government Affairs Director. David is interested in presenting more of these sessions in Florida over the coming months, and we are in the process of helping him coordinate those.

David informs me that we have almost finalized our A-Team for all congressional districts in Florida. Iggy and I are working with David to fill the remaining vacancies.

As for Tallahassee, the session has ended and we saw positive results with the legislation we’ve been tracking. Measures that would have required all private employers to use e-verify did not pass. The gun bill (Senate version) was amended to specify that it would not modify the current exceptions to Florida’s guns at work law, which exceptions allow employers to prohibit the presence of firearms in certain areas. Unemployment compensation legislation also passed that should make it easier for employers to defend against baseless claims. I believe we can consider these results the outcome of advocacy by HR Florida members and other like-minded groups, and this is yet another reason to feel good about our Day on the Hill event. We’ll begin planning soon for next year’s Day on the Hill!
