Shaping energetic, educated and engaged HR business professionals who have an influence on our field and the organizations we serve.
First, a big thank you to HR Florida for sending Joyce Chastain, SPHR and Dana Chatelain, SPHR to the SHRM National Conference in late June. I was jealous, jealous, jealous – a paying gig kept me away from all the festivities, but Joyce and Dana both brought back some great info and other things that we can use to continue to shape energetic, educate and engaged HR business professional who have an influence on our field and the organizations we serve. Apparently, the energy out there was contagious, in spite of the heat. A big conference highlight included SHRM making the announcement that “interim” president and CEO, Hank Jackson has been officially installed as the leader of the organization. Best wishes to Hank in his old, ahem, new position!

Florida’s unemployment rate is slightly above the national average – what does that mean for our Florida employers? Accurate and timely local information is critical. As a benefit to our Florida-based chapters and members, HR Florida has partnered with CompData Surveys Corporation to offer comprehensive pay and benefits survey data. HR professionals can get discounted access to data from eight major industries, more than 350 cross-industry job titles, pay data including base rates, percentiles, ranges, etc, pay practices, and breakout data by FTE, revenue, profit status, industry, region, and local area.
The Conference Team needs your help! Donations from your chapter for the Silent Auction are needed to make this event a stand-out success at this year’s state conference. Whether your chapter is small, large or somewhere in the middle, you can make a difference to the outcome of the auction by making a donation. Sometimes it is extremely difficult to decide what item or items to donate. May I make a suggestion? Donate cash towards the purchase of an item for the auction. For instance, maybe your chapter can afford to send $100 and another chapter can afford to send $50…together that $150 has more buying power. Plus, you avoid the chance of sending the same item as another chapter. And, something that many of us may not consider is that while gift cards are great items, they don’t generate the same level of excitement that an actual prize does. Having trouble deciding how your chapter can participate? Contact me at: email@example.com.

Certification Study Group: Support Leads to Success
Anne Rollins, SPHR
With a lump in my throat and sweat on my palms, I walked into the testing center to take my SPHR Certification Exam. It had been 9 ½ years since I took the PHR exam in a similar facility. So much had changed: no more paper and pencil testing, no waiting two months for results. I would see whether I passed or failed the exam exactly four hours from the time I clicked “Start.”
I had the privilege of listening to a webinar by Naomi Bloom, and she was praising the availability of cloud computing for the field of HR. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, the cloud is another term for the Internet. Cloud computing refers to having your information or software hosted or stored somewhere else other than your own systems and using a vendor’s software program. It saves you money because you don’t have to purchase the storage equipment to house your data, and it is available on a time-limited contract.
We are half-way through the year and we still have a ton of work to do! There are some great things happening in the chapters in terms of membership, and make sure to share your ideas about any membership event, idea or project where your chapter has experienced a positive outcome, or even where the biggest thing you learned is that it didn’t work. Either way, the experience is valuable and could offer insight to someone else. What didn’t work in one chapter may be just the thing for another, so no idea is a stupid one!
Media relations can simply be described as a two-way street. The northbound lane is dedicated to proactive media campaigns initiated by local SHRM chapters or affiliates to communicate news and cultivate positive media relationships. The southbound lane is reserved for reactive media situations in which you are responding to a reporter’s request for information and interview requests or to negative news coverage. During HR Florida’s inaugural Day on the Hill in Tallahassee last February, our members met with legislators to discuss legislation important to the HR profession and the businesses we represent. Among other things, we advocated for the passage of House Bill 7005 and its related Senate bill, to amend several aspects of Florida’s Unemployment Compensation Law. On June 27, 2011, Governor Rick Scott signed HB 7005 into law. Ch. 2011-235, Laws of Fla. Read more to learn what provisions are included among the reforms.
The Workforce Readiness team is in the process of creating a Workforce Readiness Toolkit as a statewide chapter initiative. We need ideas on what information is to be included (topics/focus areas) and what platform is to be used.
